元上司の宮田さんが諺をあいうえお順にまとめています。
世に伝わる格言や諺の集大成ですが、「あ」「い」「う」を
英語を含めて仕上げるのに二日掛かったそうです。
現在、「ね」まで終了しています。
改めて読むと心打つものや背筋を正すものなど素晴らしいですね。
皆様に紹介します。
「あ」
赤子は泣き泣き育つ
The child who cries grows up in good health.
明日は明日の風が吹く
The winds of tomorrow will blow tomorrow.
明日のことを言えば鬼が笑う
Nobody knows the tmorrow; speak of tomorrow and
the gres laugh．
明日の百より今日の五十
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
雨垂れ石をうがつ
Constant dripping wears away a stone.
案ずるより産むがやす
Fear often exaggerates danger.
鞍上人なく鞍下馬なし
Riding a horse so skillfully that it appears as if man and horse have
become one
阿吽の呼吸
Inspiration and expiration
虻蜂取らず
Between two stools you fall to the ground.
雨降って地固まる
After a storm comes a calm.
油を売る

命あっての物種
While there’s life, there’s hope.
一を聞いて十を知る
A word is enough to the wise.
井の中の蛙、大海を知らず
A frog in a well doesn’t know the ocean.
犬も歩けば棒に当たる
The dog that trots about finds a bone.
磯の鮑の片思い（いそのあわびのかたおもい）
One-sided love of awabi on the seashore
唯々諾々
obedient; submissive; tame; slavish
急がば回れ
More haste, less speed.
石の上にも三年
Three years on a stone (Perseverance prevails).
一年の計は元旦にあり
New Year’s Day is the day for planning
[making plans for] the coming year.
怒り心頭に発する
to become very angry; to be furious; to fly into a rage
「う」
売り言葉と買い言葉
To give one tit for tat．
馬の耳に念仏
To pray to deaf ears―preach to dear ears
魚心あれば水心
To give one tit for tat
烏合の衆
a rabble
嘘も方便
Circumstances may justify a lie.
後ろ髪を引かれる
to do something with painful reluctance
うだつが上がらない
He has no hope of getting ahead.
有為転変は世の習い
Vicissitudes are the lot of man.
牛に引かれて善光寺参り
This is a case of being led to do good by some accidental event.
嘘つきは泥棒の始まり
Liar today, thief tomorrow.
